en.Wedoany.com Reported - Hanwha Ocean has deployed a customized AI interpretation and translation system at its Geoje Shipyard. The company said that during the previous pilot phase, about 96% of foreign workers used the platform.

The system, called OTalk, was planned by Hanwha Ocean's AX division and jointly developed with Hanwha Systems and Seoul-based language technology company Flitto. It can handle shipbuilding terminology, workplace slang, local dialects, and communication needs in high-noise production environments.

During development, Hanwha Ocean was responsible for collecting shipbuilding terminology, production site expressions, and dialect data, while Flitto used these materials to build a dedicated glossary and optimize the AI model. The model was trained using speech data in seven major languages, including Korean, English, Vietnamese, and Thai; the R&D also optimized recognition for Gyeongsang region accents and shipyard-specific pronunciation.

OTalk is equipped with five levels of sound collection adjustment for different noise conditions and has more than 10 customized features, including one-on-one conversations, group chats, text, document, and image translation, as well as real-time multilingual interpretation for training courses and lectures. During safety training, the instructor's speech can be delivered simultaneously in each user's selected language, while group chat messages are translated according to each participant's language settings. After integration with the employee identification system, the service has been extended to subcontractor workers.

Flitto CEO Simon Lee said the project combines Hanwha Ocean's shipyard experience and language data with Flitto's AI interpretation and translation technology. Flitto plans to add Khmer and languages used by Sri Lankan workers, and to further develop speech synthesis technology.

Hanwha Ocean is a South Korean shipbuilding company whose business covers commercial vessels, offshore facilities, and warships, and its Geoje Shipyard covers about 4.9 million square meters. Hanwha Systems is a company under Hanwha Group that operates defense and information and communications technology businesses, involving AI, cloud, big data, and information system services.
