en.Wedoany.com Reported - Century Lithium announced it is advancing construction of a commercial-scale chlor-alkali plant in the western United States and has signed product offtake memoranda of understanding with 8 companies from the industrial and chemical sectors. The proposed plant will produce chlorine gas, hydrochloric acid, and sodium hydroxide. Century Lithium is currently screening project sites and will subsequently determine the construction plan based on site, logistics, and customer distribution.

Under the current arrangements, the 8 partner companies will purchase the chlorine gas, hydrochloric acid, and sodium hydroxide produced by the plant. Century Lithium plans to advance project construction through non-equity dilutive financing while establishing an independent revenue stream through long-term product sales arrangements. The company has not yet disclosed the names of the 8 offtakers, the specific purchase volumes for each product, the plant's designed capacity, the investment amount, or the commissioning timeline.

The chlor-alkali plant also forms a feedstock supply relationship with Century Lithium's Angel Island lithium project being advanced in Esmeralda County, Nevada. Angel Island uses hydrochloric acid leaching combined with direct lithium extraction to produce battery-grade lithium carbonate, and its process flow requires hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide. Century Lithium's existing project plan already included supporting chlor-alkali facilities to produce hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide on-site through electrolysis of sodium chloride solution, and planned to sell surplus sodium hydroxide from the project externally.

Angel Island is currently in the permitting phase. Century Lithium submitted its mine operation plan and Nevada reclamation permit application to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management on September 3, and plans to advance completeness review in the fourth quarter of 2026, enter the federal public scoping process in the second quarter of 2027, and expects to complete the environmental impact statement, record of decision, and mine operation plan-related procedures in the first quarter of 2028.

Angel Island is planned for two-phase construction, with Phase 1 ore processing capacity of 7,500 tonnes per day, expanding to 15,000 tonnes per day after 4 years of operation, with a planned mine life of approximately 40 years. The company's 2026 updated feasibility study shows a post-tax net present value of US$4.01 billion and a post-tax internal rate of return of 27.4%. The chlor-alkali system serves the function of supplying hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide within the project cost structure, and revenue from surplus sodium hydroxide sales is included as an operating cost offset.
