New York State Awards 1.7 GW of Clean Energy Projects

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 23, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) announced the results of a new round of large-scale clean energy project awards, including 8 large-scale battery energy storage projects and 13 large-scale onshore renewable energy projects, adding approximately 1.7 GW of energy resources in total, expected to drive more than US$3.7 billion in private investment and create more than 1,000 jobs. The awards came from New York State's first large-scale energy storage solicitation and the 2025 Tier 1 renewable energy standard solicitation, respectively.

The 8 energy storage projects have a combined installed capacity of 950 MW, all using lithium-ion battery technology, with storage durations ranging from 4 to 8 hours. The projects were selected competitively from 46 bids totaling approximately 6 GW, and are distributed across New York City, Long Island, the Hudson Valley, the Finger Lakes region, and western New York State. The selected projects include Lighthouse Energy Storage, Zenobe Burns, Eastwater Energy Storage, KCE NY 5, Blue Spruce Storage, Palladium Storage, Holtsville Energy Storage, and KCE NY 37.

Among them, Blue Spruce Storage and Palladium Storage are located in Bronx County, New York City; Holtsville Energy Storage and KCE NY 37 are located in Suffolk County; and the Lighthouse project is located in Chautauqua County. Payment under the above energy storage contracts will begin only after the projects complete permitting, construction, and enter commercial operation, and all 8 projects are required to be put into operation by the end of 2030.

The 13 large-scale renewable energy projects have a combined installed capacity of more than 719 MW, covering solar, onshore wind, and hydropower technologies. The solar projects include Flint Mine Solar, Hecate Energy Greene 1, Hecate Energy Greene 2, Greens Corners Solar Park, and Rich Road Solar Energy Center; the wind projects include Wethersfield Windpark, Chateaugay Windpark, Ellenburg Windpark, and Canisteo Wind Energy Center; and the hydropower projects include Spier Falls, High Dam Hydroelectric Facility, Diamond Island Hydroelectric Facility, and Theresa Hydroelectric Project.

NYSERDA estimates that once built, these 13 projects will be able to meet the electricity needs of more than 230,000 New York households each year. Some projects have already begun construction, while the remaining projects still need to continue advancing permitting, construction, and grid connection, with all projects planned to be put into operation before 2030.

New York State currently has 95 large-scale solar, onshore wind, hydropower, and offshore wind projects in operation or under development, with a planned combined installed capacity of approximately 10.5 GW, of which more than 3.2 GW has already entered the construction phase. The newly awarded projects will continue to expand the state's pipeline of large-scale energy storage and renewable energy projects.
