Low Carbon UK Advances Development of 500MW Solar and Energy Storage Project

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 25, UK renewable energy developer Low Carbon announced that it is advancing the West Oxfordshire Energy Park project in western Oxfordshire, England. The project is planned to include 500MW of solar power generation facilities, supported by a battery energy storage system and related electrical infrastructure, and is currently in the early development stage. The project site is located northwest of Lechlade and southwest of Carterton, near Langford and Little Faringdon.

According to the preliminary plan published by Low Carbon, once completed, the project is expected to generate clean electricity equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of approximately 145,000 UK households and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 154,000 tonnes per year. In addition to solar modules and energy storage facilities, the project will also include supporting electrical infrastructure, along with planned ecological mitigation and environmental enhancement areas. The specific power, capacity, and duration of discharge of the energy storage system have not yet been disclosed.

Low Carbon is currently conducting environmental surveys, technical assessments, and preliminary project design, and is engaging with local parish councils and relevant stakeholders. The company plans to launch public consultation in early 2027 and will further optimize the project boundary, equipment layout, grid connection facilities, and ecological design based on environmental surveys, technical studies, and community feedback.

As the project's planned generation capacity exceeds 100MW, West Oxfordshire Energy Park will proceed under the UK's Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project process. It will subsequently require the submission of a Development Consent Order application to the UK Planning Inspectorate, with the final approval decision to be made by the UK Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero. Low Carbon has previously advanced multiple large-scale solar projects through this approval system, and its Beacon Fen Energy Park received development consent in August 2026.
