Mobile Speed Detection Devices Approved for Darling Causeway

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 28, Transport for New South Wales approved the deployment of mobile speed camera devices on the Darling Causeway to strengthen speed enforcement along the Great Western Highway detour route. Since the closure of Victoria Pass in March this year, the Darling Causeway has become one of the main detour routes, with traffic volumes increasing significantly, and NSW Police have increased patrols along this section over the past six months. Clear signage will be installed when the mobile speed detection devices are in operation.

In addition to the newly added speed detection devices, transport authorities had previously deployed drone pilots, mobile closed-circuit television equipment, and traffic behaviour monitoring cameras along the detour routes, as well as additional heavy and light tow trucks and traffic control personnel for incident response and rapid restoration of traffic flow. The NSW Government has committed up to AUD 50 million to improve detour roads including the Darling Causeway, Chifley Road, and Lithgow Main Street, covering resurfacing, shoulder improvements, and safety facility upgrades.

Since March 27, the speed limit on part of the Darling Causeway has been reduced from 80 km/h to 70 km/h, and the 50 km/h speed limit zone near Mount Victoria has been extended outward by approximately 200 metres. According to disclosures in the NSW Parliament, as of the end of April, transport authorities had laid more than 1,500 tonnes of asphalt on the Darling Causeway and carried out heavy pavement patching and slope reinforcement works to cope with the increased traffic loads during the detour period.

Victoria Pass remains closed. The section was closed due to pavement cracking and embankment movement at Mitchell's Causeway, requiring east-west traffic on the Great Western Highway to detour via routes including the Darling Causeway. The NSW Government has advanced a permanent repair plan, with two engineering consortia led by Seymour Whyte and Gamuda previously shortlisted.
