ACCIONA Launches Development of European Railway Monitoring System for 2026

en.Wedoany.com Reported - In March 2026, the European railway research project RAIL4EARTH was launched, with ACCIONA participating and responsible for technology development related to climate resilience of railway infrastructure. The project is funded by the Horizon Europe program and incorporated into the Europe's Rail Joint Undertaking framework, with a total of 73 European institutions participating, covering railway infrastructure managers, operators, construction companies, universities, and technology centers. The current phase of the project is planned to last until September 2028, followed by a real-environment validation phase scheduled through 2030.

ACCIONA will develop and validate an advanced monitoring system for railway infrastructure within the project, used to identify the impacts of extreme weather on railway lines and related facilities, while also researching engineering mitigation measures for climate events such as high temperatures and heavy rainfall. The relevant technologies will first complete research and validation before entering real railway operating environment testing.

The project's research scope also covers energy efficiency, the circular economy, and innovation in railway vehicles and infrastructure. ACCIONA will participate in researching new railway vehicle materials containing recycled material components, increasing the recycling rate of railway equipment materials, and incorporating them together with monitoring and resilience technologies into the RAIL4EARTH technology validation system.

RAIL4EARTH belongs to the second phase of the Europe's Rail Joint Undertaking research program, with research directions including climate adaptation, energy efficiency, infrastructure digitalization, and vehicle technology. The first phase of research and validation work will continue until 2028, and subsequent phases will transfer the relevant solutions to real railway scenarios for validation, with the overall validation cycle extending to 2030.
