Turkey's Petkim launches FEED for $70 million petrochemical expansion

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 28-29, Petkim officially launched the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) for the Master Plan of the Aliaga petrochemical complex, with a FEED budget of $70 million, scheduled for completion by the end of 2027. Technip Energies was awarded the overall FEED, the process design package for the mixed-feed steam cracker, and the technology licensing contract; Univation Technologies was awarded the polyethylene unit license; and Lummus Novolen was awarded the polypropylene unit license and engineering contract.

The project plans to build a new mixed-feed steam cracker with a designed ethylene capacity of approximately 1.2 million tons per year and propylene capacity of 550,000 tons per year; downstream, it will be configured with an 850,000 tons per year HDPE/LLDPE unit, consisting of two production lines of 425,000 tons per year each, and a 550,000 tons per year polypropylene unit. The cracker, polyethylene, and polypropylene units will be advanced as an integrated system for engineering design.

Petkim's current annual ethylene capacity is approximately 558,000 tons, and polypropylene capacity is approximately 145,000 tons. After completion of the new units, ethylene capacity is planned to increase to 1.2 million tons per year, polypropylene to 550,000 tons per year, and overall polymer output is targeted to more than double the current level.

During the FEED phase, the technical solutions for each production unit, unit battery limits, commercial parameters, and economic indicators will be further determined, forming the engineering basis required for subsequent investment decisions. This contract covers three stages: technology licensing, process design packages, and front-end engineering design. The relevant Technip Energies contract has been included in its third-quarter 2026 project delivery and its Technology, Products & Services business.

The Aliaga project continues Petkim's previously completed Pre-FEED and technical feasibility work. The plan publicly disclosed at the end of 2025 already included a 1.2 million tons per year ethylene unit, a 550,000 tons per year polypropylene unit, and an approximately 800,000-ton-class polyethylene unit in the Master Plan. The new round of FEED further locks in the 850,000 tons per year HDPE/LLDPE scheme and the configuration of two 425,000 tons per year production lines.
