Borealis Austria Commissions Polypropylene Compounding Plant with Over EUR 100 Million Investment

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 28, Borealis International's specialty polypropylene compounding plant in Schwechat, Austria, officially commenced commercial operations. The project involved an investment of more than EUR 100 million to expand and upgrade the existing production site, adding specialty polypropylene composite manufacturing capacity to supply customized materials to European markets including automotive, home appliances, and infrastructure.

The new plant uses polypropylene resin, recycled polypropylene, and performance-enhancing additives as its main raw materials, producing specialized materials for different application scenarios through compounding modification. The products focus on enhancing lightweighting, mechanical properties, and the proportion of recycled materials used, and can be applied in automotive components, household and electrical products, as well as industrial scenarios such as high-temperature anti-corrosion protective layers for oil and gas transmission steel pipes.

The automotive sector is an important downstream direction for the newly added capacity. Modified polypropylene can be used to reduce component weight and increase the proportion of recycled materials used, aligning with European automotive recycling and end-of-life vehicle regulatory requirements; in the home appliance and structural component sectors, high-performance composites containing recycled content will be used to improve material performance stability and recycling levels.

The current phase of construction at the Schwechat site also included modernization and upgrading of production facilities. The government of Lower Austria confirmed that the project added specialty polypropylene compounding capacity and further expanded Borealis International's manufacturing footprint in Europe. The site will serve regional production and customer support functions, shortening the supply chain distance for European customers seeking specialty polypropylene materials.

Borealis International currently operates approximately 30 manufacturing sites and 6 innovation centers worldwide. With the Schwechat project coming on stream, its European specialty polyolefin materials production capacity has been further expanded, and together with the group's polyolefin assets in the Middle East, North America, and Asia-Pacific, forms a global supply system.
