Construction Begins on AUD 25 Million Bridport Road Freight Upgrade in Tasmania, Australia
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 2, the Tasmanian Government announced that the first batch of works under the Bridport Road Freight Efficiency and Safety Upgrade Project has officially commenced, with construction taking place between Weymouth Road and Industry Road in northeastern Tasmania. The project represents a total investment of AUD 25 million, jointly funded by the Australian Federal Government and the Tasmanian Government, with the Federal Government committing AUD 20 million.

The first batch of works includes road widening and the construction of a left-turn lane at the Industry Road intersection, adjustment of road crossfall and pavement widening along the section from Industry Road to Pipers River Road, and the addition of dedicated turning lanes at intersections including Pipers River Road, Back Creek Road, and Weymouth Road. A right-turn lane will also be added near the Pipers River General Store.
This round of construction also includes pavement rehabilitation, localized slope improvements, and intersection upgrades. Construction hours are scheduled from 7:00 to 18:00 Monday to Friday and from 8:00 to 16:00 on Saturdays. Lane closures and temporary speed limits will be implemented during works, with travel times along the affected sections expected to increase by up to 15 minutes.
The entire Bridport Road upgrade project is divided into three work packages. Package One covers the section from Weymouth Road to Industry Road and surrounding key sections, where construction has now commenced; Package Two covers the section from Jarvis Link to Little Forester River and is still in the design stage, with construction planned to begin by the end of 2027; Package Three covers the section from East Tamar Highway to the Dalrymple Road intersection, with design currently being advanced in parallel and construction planned for 2028.
Australia's Federal Infrastructure Investment Program lists the project as a targeted upgrade under the Bridport to Bell Bay freight corridor, with a total project cost of AUD 25 million and an overall construction period scheduled from the end of 2026 to the end of 2028.
