Wedoany.com Report-Jul. 3, The Turkish Ministry of Agriculture has announced the temporary closure of all livestock markets across the country to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth disease, a highly contagious viral infection affecting animals. This decision, reported by Reuters, aims to safeguard the livestock population and maintain public health.

The measure responds to the increased risk of disease transmission following the Eid al-Adha holiday, during which significant livestock trading and animal movement occur due to traditional practices involving animal purchases and slaughter. The ministry emphasized that these activities heighten the potential for the virus to spread, necessitating immediate action.

To address the issue, Turkey is continuing its vaccination program against foot-and-mouth disease. The ministry stated: “The country continues to vaccinate animals against foot-and-mouth disease.” Restrictions on livestock markets will be gradually lifted once the entire livestock population has been vaccinated, ensuring the disease is under control.

The government has assured that this temporary closure will not affect the supply and demand of meat and dairy products in Turkey. The measure is designed to balance disease prevention with the stability of the agricultural market, ensuring that consumers continue to have access to essential products.

This proactive approach reflects Turkey’s commitment to managing animal health while supporting its agricultural sector. The ministry’s ongoing efforts to vaccinate livestock aim to mitigate the impact of foot-and-mouth disease and protect the country’s livestock industry.
