Australia's IREN Plans 900 MW Data Center, Investment May Exceed AUD 10 Billion
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 14, IREN announced plans to develop the Redbank data center campus in New South Wales, Australia, proposing to build data center facilities with a total planned power capacity of 900 MW near Wagga Wagga, with potential investment exceeding AUD 10 billion. The project is planned to be implemented in phases, with a construction period expected to be 6 to 8 years, targeting grid connection starting from 2029, and is currently in the preliminary assessment stage.

The project is proposed to be located west of the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre, near Redbank Road, with existing transmission infrastructure distributed within the planned land area. The preliminary campus plan includes multiple data center buildings and on-site substation facilities. IREN plans to bear the costs associated with connecting the project to the high-voltage transmission network and to sign contracts for new renewable energy generation and energy storage projects to supply power to the campus. The campus is planned to be equipped with a closed-loop cooling system.
IREN plans to submit a project scoping report to the New South Wales Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure by the end of October 2026, followed by environmental impact assessment and planning approval work. The company expects the project to create more than 500 jobs during the construction phase and provide more than 200 full-time positions during the operational phase, and plans to build construction worker accommodation facilities within the project site.
IREN announced the project's early plans to the local community on October 14 and confirmed that the Redbank project is not included in the company's previously announced 5 GW secured power capacity portfolio. The project development plan includes site planning, grid connection, procurement of new power sources and energy storage, as well as subsequent phased data center construction.
