Egypt Approves Two 900 MW Wind Farms with Total Capacity of 1.8 GW

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 28, Egypt's Cabinet approved golden licenses for wind power projects of Shadwan Wind Energy and Shokeir Wind Energy, covering two 900 MW wind farms in Ras Shukeir, Red Sea Governorate, and the Gulf of Suez area, with a total installed capacity of 1,800 MW. The two licenses cover the construction, operation, and management of the wind farms, and both projects are scheduled to complete construction in 2028.

The Shadwan wind project is located in Ras Shukeir, Red Sea Governorate, Egypt, with an installed capacity of 900 MW. It is developed by Shadwan Wind Power and is scheduled for completion by March 31, 2028. The electricity generated will be sold to the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC). The project is expected to provide approximately 2,500 jobs during the construction phase and about 50 jobs during the 25-year operation period after commissioning.

The Shokeir wind project in the Gulf of Suez also has an installed capacity of 900 MW. It is developed by Shokeir Wind Energy under a build-own-operate (BOO) model and is scheduled for completion by November 1, 2028. The construction period is expected to be 24 months, providing approximately 800 jobs during the construction phase and an estimated 25 jobs during the 25-year operation period. The electricity generated will likewise be purchased by the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company.

The two wind farms have obtained golden licenses for investment projects, which does not mean that construction has started for both. Among them, the developer of the Shadwan project, Norway's Scatec, confirmed on October 1 that the project had commenced construction, with a total investment of approximately US$716 million. It has also signed a joint development agreement with France's EDF Power Solutions, which intends to acquire a 29% equity stake in the project.
