Wedoany.com Report-Jul. 19, Mining services company Thiess has been granted a 14-month contract extension by PT Wahana Baratama Mining for the Wahana coal mine in Satui, South Kalimantan, Indonesia. The agreement extends Thiess’s role in overburden removal and coal mining operations, leveraging its established infrastructure, technical expertise, and commitment to safety and environmental standards.
Thiess has been operating on the project since 2007.
Thiess Group executive chair and CEO Michael Wright stated: “This extension reinforces our strong relationship with Bayan and reflects the trust they place in our team to deliver safe, sustainable and efficient mining solutions. It is a testament to our people on the ground whose dedication and performance continue to create long-term value for our clients.”

Thiess Group Asia executive Cluny Randell commented: “We’re proud to continue supporting Wahana. This extension highlights the benefit of having a scaleable and responsive operation, underpinned by our deep understanding of the site and our commitment to operational excellence.”
Thiess has been involved with the Wahana coal mine since 2007. In February 2025, the company secured a 16-month extension for the Wahana East Extension project in South Kalimantan, which includes full mining services such as load and haul, drill and blast, and pit dewatering. Additionally, in November 2021, Thiess signed a three-year A$220 million (US$161.2 million) contract renewal for mining services at the same site.
In a separate development, Thiess announced a three-year, A$2.3 billion contract extension in June 2025 for Jellinbah Group’s Lake Vermont mine in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, further demonstrating its expertise in delivering large-scale mining solutions.
The Wahana contract extension strengthens Thiess’s long-standing partnership with PT Wahana Baratama Mining, supporting Indonesia’s coal production while prioritizing safety and environmental responsibility. By expanding access to coal reserves, the project contributes to the region’s energy needs, with Thiess’s operational efficiency ensuring sustainable and high-quality outcomes through 2026.
