Eni's 25th edition of the World Energy Review shows global energy demand grew 1.3% in 2025, with fossil fuels accounting for about 80%
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On November 2, Italy's Eni Group released the full version of the 25th edition of the World Energy Review (World Energy Review 2026), publishing statistics on global energy consumption, oil and gas, coal, electricity, renewables, critical minerals and CO2 emissions covering 2025. Global energy demand reached approximately 15.7 billion tonnes of oil equivalent in 2025, up 1.3% year on year; oil, natural gas and coal together accounted for about 80% of global primary energy consumption, down about 3 percentage points from 83% in 2015.

The year-on-year growth rate of global energy demand in 2025 was lower than the compound annual growth rate of about 1.6% recorded between 2015 and 2025. Global real GDP reached USD 98.4 trillion, up 2.9% year on year, with a compound annual growth rate of 2.7% from 2015 to 2025. Global population exceeded 8 billion, growing about 0.9% year on year in 2025.
Oil market statistics show that global oil demand in 2025 increased by about 900,000 barrels per day compared with 2024. Natural gas demand grew 1.2% year on year. In the report, Eni identifies artificial intelligence, data centers and overall economic activity as important drivers of changes in energy demand, and lists energy security, industrial competitiveness and environmental sustainability as interconnected issues facing the global energy system.
Global installed power generation capacity grew about 7% year on year in 2025, while actual power generation increased about 3% year on year. Among this, installed capacity of variable renewables such as wind and solar grew 12% year on year, accounting for about 35% of total global installed generation capacity, with the remaining approximately 65% made up of other power sources.
The share of global installed fossil fuel generation capacity fell from 63% in 2015 to 46% in 2025. In terms of actual power generation mix, fossil fuels still accounted for nearly 60% of global electricity generation in 2025, while variable renewables such as wind and solar accounted for slightly more than 15%. The Eni report identifies the structural gap between installed capacity and actual generation as an important statistical feature of changes in the power system.
Critical minerals statistics show that global lithium production grew 29% year on year in 2025, and graphite production grew 13% year on year. Eni incorporates critical minerals into its global energy statistics system, publishing them alongside oil, natural gas, coal and renewables data.
Global energy-related and industrial process CO2 emissions totaled 38.2 billion tonnes in 2025, up 0.4% year on year, a new high in the report's statistics. The compound annual growth rate of global related emissions from 2015 to 2025 was 1.0%, and coal remained the largest fuel source of global CO2 emissions.
Annual changes varied among major emitting countries. China's CO2 emissions fell 0.5% year on year in 2025, with a compound annual growth rate of 2.2% from 2015 to 2025; U.S. emissions rose 2.4% year on year in 2025, with a compound annual growth rate of -0.8% over the past decade; India's emissions in 2025 were essentially flat compared with 2024, with a compound annual growth rate of 3.5% from 2015 to 2025.
This release is the full 2026 edition of Eni's report. The first phase, published in July, covered key variables of the oil and gas markets, renewables and critical minerals statistics; this full version further incorporates data on coal, power generation, CO2 emissions, population and GDP, and is accompanied by an interactive query version.
