en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 30, the environmental authority of Quebec Province, Canada, issued an environmental authorization certificate for construction to the Windfall gold mine project under Gold Fields, approving mine construction subject to compliance with relevant conditions. The project is located in the James Bay region of Quebec and is planned to produce approximately 300,000 ounces of gold per year at full capacity, equivalent to about 9.33 tonnes. Gold Fields announced on November 2 that the project will be developed by its wholly-owned subsidiary Windfall Mining Group.

The environmental authorization was issued by Quebec's ministry responsible for the environment, climate change response, wildlife and parks, marking the completion of the applicable environmental and social impact assessment and review process for the Windfall gold mine. The review was conducted with the participation of the Environmental and Social Impact Review Committee (COMEX), including public hearings held in Lebel-sur-Quévillon and Waswanipi in spring 2026.

The Windfall gold mine is planned to use underground mining, with an ore production capacity of 4,950 tonnes per day and a supporting processing plant designed with a processing capacity of 4,080 tonnes per day. Project facilities include two underground mine access ramps, an ore processing plant, waste rock and tailings management facilities, and a camp accommodating approximately 600 workers. The mine site is located approximately 115 kilometers east of Lebel-sur-Quévillon.

Gold Fields will proceed toward a final investment decision (FID) for the project and plans to publish updated construction progress, development capital expenditure estimates and mineral resource and reserve data in February 2027 alongside its 2026 preliminary results. The company will also remobilize site personnel and equipment, gradually resume previously suspended underground operations, and advance early civil works and construction camp establishment.

Previous underground exploration work at the project was suspended due to the expiry of the bulk sample exploration permit at the end of August 2026. With the environmental authorization now obtained, Gold Fields will advance the mining lease and other supporting permit applications and initiate certain early construction activities within the scope already authorized by the board of directors.

In June 2026, Gold Fields signed the Uukiimau Impact and Benefit Agreement with the Waswanipi Cree First Nation, the Cree Nation Government and the Grand Council of the Crees. The agreement covers personnel training, employment, local business participation, environmental monitoring and financial benefit arrangements over the project's operating life, establishing a community cooperation mechanism for subsequent mine development.
