Wedoany.com Report-Sept. 12, RWE has submitted a planning application for the 59MW Gaerwen onshore wind farm in north Wales. The project proposes nine turbines with tip heights of 180 and 200 metres, situated across a site spanning the Gwynedd and Denbighshire borders.

If approved by Welsh Ministers, RWE expects the wind farm to be operational by 2030.

Arfon Edwards, Gaerwen project manager, said: “This submission is a significant step towards delivering the Gaerwen wind farm, reflecting the time and energy invested in laying out in detail how, if fully approved, the project would be constructed and operated. Projects like this are key if Wales is to meet its own energy needs through renewable generation within the next decade, particularly as demand is set to rise significantly between now and 2035. In addition, by developing a community benefit package and ensuring the region’s companies can bid for work, we can help secure enduring local economic benefits.”

RWE currently operates three onshore and three offshore wind farms in Wales, along with five hydroelectric sites, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to expanding renewable energy capacity in the region.

The Gaerwen wind farm would contribute to Wales’ renewable energy targets by generating clean electricity to help meet growing local demand. The inclusion of a community benefit package and opportunities for local companies highlights the project’s potential to support economic development in the surrounding areas.

The proposed turbine heights of 180 and 200 metres are designed to maximize energy capture from prevailing winds while minimizing environmental impact. The planning process will involve environmental assessments, consultations with local stakeholders, and detailed engineering studies to ensure the project aligns with regional planning and sustainability objectives.

RWE’s submission reflects careful consideration of construction, operation, and maintenance phases to ensure efficient and reliable energy production. The company’s existing portfolio in Wales demonstrates experience in managing wind and hydroelectric assets while integrating community engagement and local economic opportunities into project development.

Once operational, the Gaerwen wind farm is expected to supply a significant amount of renewable electricity to the grid, supporting regional energy security and contributing to wider efforts to decarbonize electricity generation. The project’s timeline and design align with Wales’ broader renewable energy strategy, addressing both electricity demand growth and the transition toward sustainable energy sources over the next decade.
