Wedoany.com Report-Sept. 26, Syria’s state procurement agency has withdrawn an international tender for 200,000 tonnes of wheat, according to industry sources. The bidding period for the tender concluded on September 15, with delivery expected within 60 days of contract signing. The cancellation reflects ongoing challenges in securing grain supplies to meet domestic demand.

The agency is preparing to launch a new tender in the near future to address the country’s wheat needs. “We are working to ensure a stable supply of wheat to support food security,” said a representative from the General Establishment for Cereal Processing and Trade. Imported wheat remains critical to bridging Syria’s domestic production gap, exacerbated by recent agricultural challenges.

In its previous tender in March, Syria secured approximately 100,000 tonnes of wheat from Black Sea suppliers, marking the first significant grain procurement since the country’s leadership transition late last year. The upcoming tender aims to further bolster reserves, ensuring the availability of wheat for essential food programs, including the state-subsidized bread initiative.

Syria’s wheat imports are vital to addressing a shortfall caused by reduced local harvests. The country consumes around 4 million tonnes of wheat annually, but domestic production has declined significantly. The new tender will focus on sourcing wheat from reliable international markets to maintain food security and support the population’s needs.

Efforts to secure wheat supplies are part of broader initiatives to stabilize food access across Syria. The state procurement agency is prioritizing efficient and transparent processes to meet demand while navigating logistical and financial considerations. By engaging with global suppliers, Syria aims to ensure a consistent flow of wheat to support its citizens and sustain essential food programs.
