Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 3, Samsung C&T, the construction arm of Samsung Group, announced on Monday that it has secured a 1.9 trillion won (US$1.13 billion) contract for a carbon capture and storage (CCS) project in Qatar. The company confirmed in a regulatory filing that it received a letter of award from QatarEnergy LNG for the initiative.

The project involves constructing a carbon capture facility at QatarEnergy’s existing liquefied natural gas (LNG) production complex in Ras Laffan Industrial City, located approximately 80 kilometers north of Doha. The facility is scheduled for completion by 2030 and is designed to capture around 4.1 million tons of carbon dioxide annually. Captured CO₂ will be compressed and transported via pipelines for underground storage, supporting Qatar’s efforts to reduce industrial carbon emissions while maintaining LNG production efficiency.

Samsung C&T stated that it will deploy specialists with prior experience in LNG projects in Qatar and collaborate with local partners to execute the project. The company emphasized that leveraging local expertise will be essential to ensuring efficient construction, operational safety, and adherence to project timelines.

The Ras Laffan CCS project is part of a broader regional effort to expand carbon reduction infrastructure in the Middle East’s energy sector. By implementing carbon capture technologies at major LNG facilities, Qatar aims to lower emissions from one of its key export industries while advancing global energy transition objectives.

Samsung C&T has established a strong presence in Qatar’s energy sector in recent years. The company has previously secured several large-scale projects, including a 4 trillion won power plant construction project last year, highlighting its growing role in the country’s industrial development.

The company noted that the new carbon capture facility will contribute to sustainable industrial operations and support the region’s long-term environmental goals. The project combines advanced engineering with practical energy expertise, aiming to demonstrate large-scale carbon management capabilities within an operational LNG complex.

Overall, the contract reinforces Samsung C&T’s position as a leading international engineering and construction firm capable of delivering complex energy projects. By integrating CCS technology with existing LNG infrastructure, the initiative is expected to enhance environmental performance, ensure operational efficiency, and provide a model for future carbon management projects in the region.

The company emphasized that its participation in Qatar’s CCS project reflects a commitment to sustainable industrial solutions and a proactive approach to supporting client objectives while strengthening local partnerships and knowledge transfer in the Middle East energy sector.
