Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 3, Topsoe has officially inaugurated what it describes as Europe’s largest Solid Oxide Electrolyser Cell (SOEC) manufacturing facility in Herning, Denmark. The company stated that the 500 MW plant will produce high-efficiency SOEC stacks for industrial-scale green hydrogen projects, with the capacity to expand further to meet growing demand for clean energy solutions.
The Herning facility represents Topsoe’s largest investment to date and is supported by €94 million from the EU Innovation Fund. The company highlighted that the plant is designed to aid the decarbonization of heavy industry, noting that hard-to-abate sectors are responsible for roughly 30% of global CO₂ emissions. By producing efficient SOEC stacks at scale, Topsoe aims to accelerate industrial adoption of green hydrogen while contributing to global emissions reductions.
Morten Bodskov, Denmark’s Minister for Industry, Business and Financial Affairs, commented on the inauguration: “This is a big day for Herning and Denmark. The factory creates jobs, growth and a greener future.” He emphasized the facility’s role in strengthening the local economy and supporting sustainable industrial development.
Roeland Baan, Chief Executive of Topsoe, said: “Our SOEC facility will be a game-changer for the energy transition. The technology’s unmatched efficiency is pivotal for scaling green hydrogen production for industrial decarbonization.” He noted that the plant’s operations will help meet the increasing demand for low-carbon hydrogen in multiple industrial sectors.
The facility occupies 23,000 m² and, according to Topsoe, is planned to support up to 10 GW of installed capacity within ten years. The company estimates that the facility could enable the reduction of up to 15 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually once fully operational, highlighting the potential impact of large-scale green hydrogen production on global industrial emissions.
Topsoe also confirmed that offtake agreements are already in place with First Ammonia in Texas and Forestal in Spain, demonstrating the international demand for SOEC technology and green hydrogen solutions. The facility’s strategic location in Denmark supports efficient production and distribution to key industrial markets in Europe and abroad.
Overall, the Herning SOEC plant underscores Topsoe’s commitment to advancing green hydrogen technology and industrial decarbonization. By combining large-scale production capacity, high-efficiency electrolyser technology, and international offtake partnerships, the company aims to drive the energy transition forward while supporting economic growth, job creation, and sustainability objectives in Denmark and globally.
