Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 14, The UK Government has granted official approval for the £208 million North Hykeham Relief Road in Lincolnshire, a new bypass designed to ease traffic around the historic city of Lincoln. Construction is set to begin in early 2026, with Balfour Beatty appointed as the main contractor.

The dual carriageway will link the A46 at Hykeham Roundabout with the recently completed Lincoln Eastern Bypass, creating a full ring road around Lincoln. The project includes new roundabouts at South Hykeham Road, Brant Road, and Grantham Road, as well as two new bridges: one crossing the Witham River and another at Station Road.

The UK’s Department for Transport is providing £100 million of the funding, while Lincolnshire County Council oversees the project. The new road is expected to reduce congestion in the city and decrease the number of vehicles entering central Lincoln, improving overall traffic flow and accessibility.

Engineering challenges include constructing on marshy, flood-prone terrain. The road will be elevated and incorporate extensive drainage systems to prevent flooding and ensure long-term durability. The alignment also passes near the historic RAF Waddington base, operational since 1916, which may impose certain constraints on construction activities.

The North Hykeham Relief Road forms part of Lincolnshire’s broader transport strategy, complementing the Lincoln Eastern Bypass to enhance connectivity across the region.
