The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) recently approved federal funding to support safety upgrades at a grade crossing operated by Ohio Central Railroad in Dresden, Muskingum County. This funding will assist in the installation of new safety equipment at the railroad crossing, enhancing traffic safety.

Ohio Central Railroad is required to complete the installation of flashing lights, gates, curbs, and sidewalks at the grade crossing of State Route 208 and Muskingum Avenue by November 18. These upgrade measures aim to reduce the risk of accidents and ensure the safe passage of pedestrians and vehicles across the railroad crossing.

PUCO officials noted that the total cost for this railroad crossing upgrade is $201,606. Federal funding will cover 80% of the cost, approximately $161,285, while Ohio Central Railroad will be responsible for the remaining $40,321. This funding arrangement reflects the government's emphasis on railroad infrastructure safety.

Ohio Central Railroad operates a 71-mile track network and interchanges business with several railroad companies within Ohio. These include interchanges with the Columbus and Ohio River Railroad in Morgan Run and Zanesville, with CSX in Columbus, with Norfolk Southern Railway in Columbus and Goulds, with Ohio Southern Railroad in Zanesville, and with the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway in Harmon. These interconnections enhance the efficiency of rail transportation.

Ohio Central Railroad was acquired by Genesee & Wyoming Inc. in 2008. This railroad crossing upgrade is part of the company's ongoing investment in infrastructure. With the support of federal funding, Ohio Central Railroad can further optimize its railroad crossing safety standards, providing more reliable protection for community traffic.
