Wedoany.com Report on Mar 11th, Shintech Louisiana announced a $3.4 billion investment to expand its manufacturing complex in Plaquemine, Louisiana, to increase production capacity for ethylene, chlor-alkali, and vinyl chloride monomer (VCM). This investment plan includes adding a second ethylene unit and a fourth chlor-alkali and VCM unit within the existing facility in Iberville Parish, utilizing advanced process technology. The aim is to reduce emissions during the production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and caustic soda while strengthening the supply stability of PVC feedstock.
The expansion project will be implemented in phases, with the first phase targeted for completion by 2030. According to the company announcement, this initiative will create 163 new direct jobs with an average annual salary of approximately $117,000, while securing 725 existing positions. The Louisiana Economic Development (LED) agency predicts the project will also generate about 655 indirect jobs, further boosting local economic development.
Shintech has been operating in Louisiana since 2000 and has invested approximately $9 billion through seven major projects over the past 25 years. LED noted that the Plaquemine facility is a core component of Shintech's global PVC supply chain, positioning the company as one of the top exporters by container volume at the Port of New Orleans.
The project development phase is expected to create thousands of construction jobs and about 100 contractor positions. State officials stated that workforce needs will be met through workforce development programs and local hiring initiatives. To support the expansion, Louisiana is providing incentives including workforce training, equipment investment, and infrastructure improvements.
