en.Wedoany.com Reported - UK-based low-carbon fertilizer producer Atome has announced the Final Investment Decision (FID) for its flagship project in Villeta, Paraguay—a 260,000-tonne-per-annum low-carbon Calcium Ammonium Nitrate (CAN) plant. Shareholder approval is expected in May, after which construction will commence as soon as possible.

The $665 million plant, scheduled to start production by October 2029 or earlier, will be powered entirely by renewable baseload hydropower, with the potential to replace up to 12.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions over its lifecycle. In September 2025, Atome signed a full offtake agreement with Norwegian company Yara for a minimum of ten years.

Atome stated that the project will improve fertilizer supply in South America, create jobs, and strengthen Paraguay’s industrial base. Located in the Mercosur trade bloc—which includes Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Uruguay, and Paraguay—the Villeta plant aims to achieve significant sales volumes in the agricultural regions of Argentina and Brazil.

"The FID for the Villeta project is a landmark achievement for ATOME," said CEO Olivier Mussat. "We are grateful for the support of the Paraguayan government and people, as well as the contributions of our strategic partner Casale and offtaker Yara International."
