Singapore's Sembcorp Industries Secures $2.1 Billion Loan to Acquire Australia's Alinta Energy, Expanding Asia-Pacific Operations

The funds will support Sembcorp's expansion plans and strengthen its business coverage in the Asia-Pacific region.

The loan was provided by several international banks, with major lenders including Australia and New Zealand Banking Group, DBS Group, and Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation. Other participating institutions include Bank of China, China Everbright Bank, Mizuho Financial Group, and United Overseas Bank. Part of the proceeds will be used to repay a A$6.5 billion bridge loan Sembcorp previously obtained from Chow Tai Fook Enterprises to facilitate the acquisition process.

Through the acquisition of Alinta Energy, Sembcorp Industries will gain significant energy infrastructure in Australia, including the Loy Yang coal-fired power plant in Victoria, which supplies approximately 20% of the state's electricity. Alinta Energy operates multiple generation assets in Australia and New Zealand and is involved in fuel transportation and gas contracts, contributing to the diversification of Sembcorp's energy portfolio.
