en.Wedoany.com Reported - Lummus Technology recently signed an agreement with GPS Renewables to apply its ethanol-to-jet (ETJ) technology at NTPC's project in Pudimadaka, Andhra Pradesh. This marks the first commercial license for Lummus' integrated ETJ platform and will support the construction of India's first plant to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from ethanol derived from flue gas.

Lummus stated that the technology offers a proven, lower-cost pathway for SAF production, capable of reducing carbon intensity as well as capital and operating expenditures. Chief Business Officer Romain Lemoine noted: "This project represents a significant milestone for Lummus, moving our ethanol-to-jet fuel technology from concept to commercial reality." He added that India's mature ethanol ecosystem provides an "ideal launch environment" for promoting the technology globally.

India's rapidly growing aviation market and supportive policies are driving demand for new SAF solutions. Ethanol-based SAF has become a strategic choice, leveraging the country's abundant feedstock supply and long-standing ethanol blending program. GPS Renewables Co-founder and CEO Mainak Chakraborty emphasized: "SAF remains the most reliable pathway for aviation decarbonization, yet viable commercial-scale production is still limited. Our partnership with Lummus reflects our commitment to accelerating India's clean energy transition and achieving large-scale SAF production."

The core of the technology is the green ethylene technology jointly developed by Lummus and Braskem, which has been validated at Braskem's ethanol dehydration unit in Brazil. Lummus has combined this with oligomerization and hydroprocessing technologies to form a complete ETJ value chain, offering technology licensing, basic engineering, proprietary catalyst supply, and technical support.
