en.Wedoany.com Reported - In the first quarter of this year, the total volume of liquefied natural gas (LNG) imported by the EU from Russia increased by 16% year-on-year, reaching the highest level since the full escalation of the Ukraine crisis in 2022.

This report, released by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA), shows that the EU imported 6.9 billion cubic meters of LNG from Russia in the first three months of this year, a 16% year-on-year increase; the import volume continued its upward trend in April, rising by 17% year-on-year.

The report states that although natural gas imports and exports via pipeline between EU countries and Russia have largely ceased, LNG trade via shipping continues, with major buyers including France, Spain, and Belgium. Russia remains the EU's second-largest LNG supplier, with the United States being the largest.

The report notes that EU LNG imports from the United States have been increasing year by year, more than tripling between 2021 and 2025. In the first quarter of this year, EU LNG imports from the US rose by 27% year-on-year. The report projects that by 2028, 80% of the LNG imported by the EU will come from the United States.

Ana Maria Jaller-Makarewicz, an energy analyst at the institute, said that the EU's shift from pipeline gas to LNG was originally intended to seek energy supply security and diversify import channels, but energy supply disruptions caused by the Middle East situation and over-reliance on US LNG have caused their plan to "fall short on both ends."
