en.Wedoany.com Reported - SpaceX has decided to lease the entire computing power of its Colossus 1 data center in Tennessee to Anthropic, after the facility encountered technical issues when used for its own Grok AI workloads.
As part of a cluster comprising three campuses, SpaceX originally planned to use Colossus 1 to train more advanced AI models. However, latency issues emerged when the facility was connected to two other data centers located more than 10 miles apart.
According to Bloomberg, citing sources familiar with the matter, aging network infrastructure exacerbated these problems. High-performance AI training relies on fast, low-latency connections between computing nodes, and various bottlenecks can slow down the entire cluster's operation.
Instead of continuing to try to overcome these limitations, SpaceX decided to lease the data center to a third party, believing this would generate greater value and create an additional revenue stream.
This move comes after SpaceX acquired xAI earlier this year, with data center expansion being one of the key pillars of the story it tells to investors.
