Wedoany.com Report-Mar 17, A consortium comprised of Enagás, Holcim, and Saggas has launched the CO2necta project for carbon capture, transport and storage in the Valencian municipality of Sagunto.

CO2necta is aimed to support the decarbonisation of energy intensive industries with the expectation of preventing the emission of more than 560,000t of CO2 per year in the Sagunto community.
The proposal is to develop a CO2 capture plant at the Holcim factory in Sagunto.
The CO2 will be transported through a new pipeline by Enagás, the Spanish gas TSO, to the Saggas LNG terminal in the port of Sagunto – majority owned by Enagás – where a liquefaction process will take place.
Once in a liquid state, the CO2 will be stored for transport by ship to a final geological storage.

“This pioneering project promotes sustainable CO2 management in Spain and Europe and highlights the role of strategic infrastructures like Saggas in leading decarbonisation in the industry, boosting the sector’s competitiveness.”
The CO2necta project is based on a circular economy model, with the biogenic portion of the captured CO2 to be used for the production of e-methanol and other biofuels and decarbonisation in the municipality of Sagunto and the surrounding areas.
Ricardo de Pablos, CEO of Holcim Spain, adds that industrial decarbonisation requires cross-sector alliances and projects that allow for the development of the CO2 value chain
Said de Pablos: “CO2necta is a key project for driving the decarbonisation of cement and concrete, as well as a driver of growth for the industry in our country.”
Timescales for the project have not been specified but the consortium intends to put it forward in the next call for innovation funding from the European Commission’s programme for support for innovative low carbon technologies.
