The initiative stems from the approval of a national AI Trust by Nigeria's Federal Executive Council (FEC), aiming to ensure long-term leadership and governance in the country's AI development and deployment. Nigeria's Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, stated that this workshop marks the beginning of a process to establish the first institutional framework of its kind, designed to provide sustainable management of AI in Nigeria.

The proposed National AI Trust is envisioned as a trustee body responsible for guiding the development and application of AI technologies to deliver broad economic and social benefits for the people of Nigeria. This initiative comes as countries worldwide seek to establish governance structures to manage the opportunities and challenges posed by rapidly evolving AI technologies. Tijani noted that as AI becomes a key driver of economic competitiveness, nations need not only to build technical capabilities but also to create institutions that support responsible and sustainable innovation.

The London workshop provided Nigerian stakeholders with an opportunity to engage with global experts and shape the future direction of the National AI Trust from diverse perspectives. Discussions focused on governance frameworks, institutional design, and strategies to ensure AI development aligns with national development priorities. During his visit, Tijani also participated in a thematic dialogue at the Warwick Business School, University of Warwick, exploring global perspectives on AI, institutions, and national competitiveness, as well as the talent, infrastructure, digital public infrastructure, and institutional capacity Nigeria needs in an AI-driven global economy.

The minister emphasized the country's ongoing efforts in innovation, skills development, and technology infrastructure investment to strengthen the digital ecosystem. The workshop was supported by the MacArthur Foundation, Co-Creation Hub (CcHUB), and the University of Warwick, and insights from participants will be used to shape the governance and operational framework of the proposed National AI Trust.

This initiative is part of Nigeria's broader strategy to leverage AI and emerging technologies to drive innovation, economic growth, and national development, while ensuring that the benefits of technological progress reach all segments of society. As global competition in the AI field intensifies, the establishment of the National AI Trust is expected to strengthen Nigeria's institutional readiness, positioning the country as a leader in responsible AI development and governance in Africa.
