The announcement was made on Monday during a ceremony in Rio de Janeiro marking BNDES's 74th anniversary, attended by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, BNDES President Aloizio Mercadante, and Petrobras CEO Magda Chambriard.

The winning companies are Systemica, brCarbon, and re.green, selected through the ProFloresta+ program. This initiative, a joint effort by BNDES and Petrobras, aims to create firm demand for carbon credits generated from ecological restoration using native species in the Amazon biome, while ensuring high integrity of the credits.

The specific winning bids are: Systemica and brCarbon each secured contracts for 2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) at prices of $55.33 and $55.76 per tonne, respectively; re.green won a contract for 1 million tonnes at $73.82 per tonne. BNDES stated that this marks the first time in Brazil that prices for ecological restoration carbon credits have been publicly disclosed in a transaction.

The contracts have a 25-year term and include social and environmental safeguards. The program is expected to mobilize approximately 450 million reais (about $87.5 million) in planting investments, create 6,300 jobs, support the planting of over 25 million native trees, and capture 5 million metric tonnes of carbon. Winning projects can also access financing from BNDES at an annual interest rate of approximately 2%, with loan terms of up to 25 years and a grace period of about five years.

The ProFloresta+ program was launched in March 2025, aiming through the partnership between BNDES and Petrobras to generate up to 15 million carbon credits in future phases, covering up to 50,000 hectares (about 123,500 acres) of degraded Amazon land. BNDES's Mercadante stated that the program demonstrates Brazil's capacity to lead a global economic model based on restoration, biodiversity, and high-integrity carbon credit production, turning forests into economic, climate, and social assets for the country.
