en.Wedoany.com Reported - China's Hainan Province has recently launched a key provincial "open competition" project—"Research on Key Technologies for Green Development and Efficient Utilization of National Strategic Mineral Resources of Zirconium and Hafnium." At the project initiation and implementation plan review meeting, the implementation plan passed expert panel evaluation, marking the project's entry into the implementation phase.
Led by the Mineral Resources Exploration Institute of Hainan Provincial Geological Bureau, in collaboration with the Wuhan Geological Survey Center of China Geological Survey, Hainan University, and the Hainan Provincial Academy of Environmental Sciences, this project is the first provincial-level key R&D project undertaken by the Exploration Institute.
During the review session of the initiation meeting, the expert panel concluded that the project plan has a solid basis, comprehensive content, clear objectives and tasks, and scientifically feasible work deployment and technical routes, aligning with the task book and relevant technical requirements. The panel also provided constructive suggestions on work deployment and the implementation of demonstration projects.
Zirconium and hafnium are important strategic mineral resources in China, widely used in fields such as new materials and information technology. Hainan's zirconium and hafnium placer resource reserves account for 67% of China's total, showing potential for building large-scale resource bases. In 2024, Hainan achieved its "14th Five-Year Plan" target for new zirconium and hafnium resources ahead of schedule, enhancing the nation's strategic resource security. With the advancement of the Hainan Free Trade Port, higher demands are placed on the green development and efficient utilization of zirconium and hafnium resources. Constrained by ecological environmental protection and key technological bottlenecks, Hainan has long faced the dilemma of failing to transform resource advantages into industrial advantages. The launch of this project signifies a critical step for Hainan in tackling key technologies and building a green development system in the field of national strategic mineral resources.
This meeting completed the scientific review of the project implementation plan, laying the foundation for subsequent execution. In the next phase, the project team will focus on the metallogenic theory of Hainan's zirconium and hafnium placers and green exploration, mining, and beneficiation technologies, break through the bottleneck of green and efficient separation of zirconium and hafnium, assess the ecological and environmental impacts of the entire exploration-mining-beneficiation-metallurgy chain, and develop ecological restoration measures. The goal is to establish a pilot and demonstration base for a green development system for zirconium and hafnium placer exploration, mining, beneficiation, and metallurgy on Hainan Island, striving to provide replicable solutions for the green development of similar minerals in China and support national mineral resource security and the construction of Hainan's zirconium and hafnium resource guarantee and utilization base.
