Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 7, Multinational energy firm Enel, defense company Leonardo, and power generation supplier Ansaldo Energia have agreed to establish a joint venture (JV) to explore nuclear energy options in Italy. The new entity will focus on a feasibility study to determine the most appropriate nuclear technology for the country. This development comes after recent legislation from Italy’s government, which has opened possibilities for nuclear energy, reversing a ban in place since 1987.

Enel will offer its experience in operating nuclear power stations in Spain.

Enel will contribute its expertise from managing nuclear power plants in Spain, while Leonardo will examine potential military applications of nuclear energy. Italy’s Energy Minister, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, said via videolink: “The regulatory framework will likely be completed in two and a half years from now.” Although the government favors small modular reactors as a practical solution, experts estimate that their deployment could take over a decade, raising questions about the timeline.

In a separate move, Enel’s renewable energy division, Potentia Energy, finalized the purchase of controlling stakes in a renewable energy portfolio exceeding 1GW in Australia. The deal, agreed upon in February 2025, involves assets from CVC DIF and Cbus Super. This portfolio spans a range of technologies and locations, featuring over 700MW of active wind and solar projects and 430MW of advanced battery energy storage system (BESS) developments.

The Australian acquisition aligns with Enel Group’s strategy to grow its renewable energy holdings, targeting stable markets. It builds on the company’s earlier purchase of 626MW of hydropower assets in Spain, also completed in February 2025. These steps reflect Enel’s commitment to expanding its clean energy footprint globally.
