Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 9, A collaborative team, including the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), landscape architect Lola, Royal Haskoning DHV, and artist Petrit Halilaj, has secured a competition to redesign the Selman Stërmasi Stadium in central Tirana, Albania’s capital. Originally constructed in 1956, the stadium will undergo significant upgrades to enhance its functionality and appeal.
The renovation will increase the stadium’s seating capacity from 9,500 to 15,000. A newly designed arena bowl will improve sightlines for spectators and bring the stands closer to the pitch, enhancing the viewing experience. These changes aim to modernize the facility while preserving its role as a key community space.
The project includes a triangular entrance plaza featuring residential units, a hotel, offices, retail spaces, and restaurants. Drawing inspiration from the ancient Stadium of Amantia, an Illyrian structure from the third century BCE, the design incorporates natural stone cladding. The historic site’s stacked stone seating influenced the new stadium’s peaks and terraces, blending tradition with contemporary elements.
The broader mixed-use development reflects Albania’s mountainous terrain through its layered design. Crafted by the OMA-led team, this approach integrates the stadium into a vibrant urban hub. The proposal outshone submissions from notable firms like Foster + Partners, FAR frohn&rojas, Office Kersten Geers David Van Severen, and Zaha Hadid Architects in the design competition.
David Gianotten, OMA managing partner, emphasized the cultural significance of the project, stating: “Football is a cornerstone of urban culture and national identity across Europe and around the world, and we feel it especially intensely here in Tirana. Our design is meant to accelerate the exciting changes taking place in the city, while fostering closer bonds within and between neighbourhoods and communities here.” The vision highlights football’s role in uniting people and driving urban progress.
Located in central Tirana, the Selman Stërmasi Stadium will transform into a multifaceted venue. The expanded capacity and improved layout cater to local fans, while the plaza’s commercial and residential offerings support community needs without relying on external trade. The project focuses on enhancing local consumption and engagement.
