Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 9, A planning application has been submitted to St Helens Borough Council in the UK for a modern, accessible transport interchange in the town center. The St Helens Transport Interchange project is supported by funding from the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and the UK government’s Towns Fund. It aims to enhance travel facilities and improve connectivity in the area.

The project is expected to be completed in 2026.

The new interchange will offer upgraded amenities, including two enclosed concourses with sheltered waiting zones, a travel center, and accessible restrooms featuring a Changing Places facility. Additional improvements include better public spaces with pedestrian and cycling paths linking to the town’s train station, alongside a new civic square between the interchange and the historic Gamble Building. The design incorporates sustainable elements like recycled materials, solar panels, and green roofs to boost biodiversity and harness solar energy.

Led by UK-based VINCI Building, the project is a collaboration with St Helens Borough Council and the English Cities Fund (ECF), a partnership involving Homes England, Legal & General, and Muse. Demolition began in March following the council’s announcement in February, with a Reserved Matters application planned next. Public consultation at the end of 2024 showed strong community backing for the proposals. The interchange will expand to 11 bus stands from the current nine, relocating all bus parking into the new structure.

Accessibility is central to the design, featuring step-free access, clear signage, digital and audio announcements, and adjustable lighting. The facility will also include street furniture, enhanced CCTV, better lighting, trees, and landscaping, connecting key landmarks like the Gamble Building, Theatre Royal, and the upcoming Hampton by Hilton hotel. Completion is targeted for 2026, coinciding with the launch of St Helens’ first franchised bus services, part of a broader network rollout across the region by 2027, funded by a £710m ($217.8m) City Region Transport Settlement.

Councillor Anthony Burns, St Helens Borough Council leader, stated: “These plans are one of the key parts of our vision for transforming St Helens town centre. Equipping St Helens Borough with a well-connected, integrated, and accessible public transport system is a key aim of the town centre regeneration programme.” He added: “The St Helens Interchange will make sure the town’s long-term public transport needs are met, seamlessly providing a more efficient operational layout and vastly improving the experience of passengers, cyclists and pedestrians. Together with the new public realm, it will form a key gateway into the town centre, in a vibrant and welcoming high-quality public space.”

The initiative reflects a commitment to sustainable urban development, enhancing transport efficiency and community spaces in St Helens while aligning with regional goals for improved public transit by 2027.
