en.Wedoany.com Reported - Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPP Investments) announced a $1.75 billion (CAD 2.4 billion) investment in global investment organization EQT to support its artificial intelligence infrastructure strategy developed in partnership with data center operator EdgeConneX.

This investment is part of CPP Investments' strategy to expand its exposure to digital infrastructure platforms in North America, Asia Pacific, and Europe, responding to the growing demand for digital infrastructure driven by the widespread adoption of cloud computing and artificial intelligence workloads. Max Biagosch, Senior Managing Director and Global Head of Real Assets at CPP Investments, stated that as cloud and AI adoption continues, global demand for digital infrastructure is accelerating. This co-investment with EQT increases exposure to industries supported by persistent, long-term demand drivers.

Since EQT acquired EdgeConneX in 2020, the company's capacity has surged nearly 20-fold, and it plans to add 10 gigawatts of data center development capacity in the coming years.

According to Mordor Intelligence, the Canadian data center market is expected to grow from $11.46 billion in 2025 to $13.06 billion in 2026, and is forecast to reach $25.09 billion by 2031, reflecting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.95% from 2026 to 2031. The market's IT load capacity is projected to increase from 3.13 gigawatts in 2025 to 3.97 gigawatts in 2030, with a CAGR of 4.89% over the same period. This growth is attributed to hyperscale cloud providers localizing workloads, rising demand for AI training infrastructure, and data sovereignty regulations requiring specific workloads to be processed within Canada. Tier 3 facilities are expected to dominate due to their balance of reliability and cost-effectiveness, while colocation remains the preferred deployment model as enterprises seek to avoid the high capital intensity of building in-house data centers.
