en.Wedoany.com Reported - Kao Data has renewed its renewable electricity supply agreement with Shell Energy, extending the partnership that began in 2022. The agreement helps the data center operator match its energy consumption with renewable electricity generation from the UK.

Since 2022, Shell Energy has supplied Kao Data with approximately 140 GWh of electricity annually, matched with electricity generated by UK renewable energy assets. From 2025, this supply has included the initial output from Dogger Bank, one of the world's largest offshore wind farms under construction.

Kao Data's decision to extend the agreement comes as the industry continues to face pressure on electricity demand, particularly with the increasing workloads of artificial intelligence and advanced computing. This has prompted some operators to consider alternative power access options beyond relying solely on the grid, including private line agreements with renewable energy developers.

The industry is also facing greater scrutiny over its environmental impact. Kao Data stated that agreements such as the one with Shell Energy enable it to ensure that the energy consumed across all its facilities is matched with UK renewable electricity generation.

Kao Data is also the first UK data center operator to switch its backup power systems to hydrotreated vegetable oil fuel. The company claims this fuel can reduce lifecycle emissions by up to 90% compared to traditional diesel.

James Lewis, Investment Director at Kao Data, noted that sustainability runs through all of the company's operations, and building strategic partnerships remains crucial to achieving its goals. The collaboration between Kao Data and Shell Energy has played a significant role in shaping its long-term energy management and decarbonization strategy. Extending this partnership allows customers' electricity needs to be matched with certified UK renewable electricity generation, reinforcing the company's commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2030.
