India's Bharti Airtel Builds 1 GW Data Center and Expands Sovereign Cloud

According to the company's fiscal year 2026 annual report, its data center subsidiary Nxtra plans to expand data center capacity to 1 GW over the next few years, while Airtel Cloud continues to advance the construction of sovereign-grade, carrier-grade cloud platforms. Together with the existing 5G network, this forms an infrastructure system covering computing power, data storage, cloud services, and high-speed connectivity.

Nxtra's goal is to build 1 GW of data center capacity. This project will address India's rapidly growing demand for cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and data localization, continuously increasing data processing and storage facilities to enable more enterprises to deploy digital businesses, cloud applications, and AI workloads within India.

Data center expansion is not just about adding floor space or server numbers. 1 GW capacity means that power supply and distribution systems, cooling facilities, server cabinets, network connections, backup power, and operational management platforms all need to scale simultaneously. A shortfall in any one area could limit the actual operational scale of server clusters and high-density computing equipment.

AI tasks place higher demands on data center infrastructure. The difference between Airtel Cloud and ordinary public cloud services lies in its construction focus, which is more aligned with communication networks and local data operation scenarios. A carrier-grade cloud platform requires continuous operation, network coordination, and large-scale user access capabilities, while a sovereign-grade cloud platform must meet Indian market requirements for data storage location, system management, and business control.

Data centers and cloud platforms ultimately rely on communication networks to connect users, devices, and applications. Bharti Airtel currently has 188 million 5G subscribers, and its 5G Plus network carries half of the company's total wireless data traffic, indicating that 5G has moved from initial coverage construction to large-scale service deployment.

As 5G traffic continues to grow, data exchange between mobile networks, cloud platforms, and data centers will become more frequent. When users access cloud applications, enterprise systems, and AI services via 5G networks, data must flow continuously between radio access networks, backbone transmission facilities, cloud platforms, and data centers. Together, these three components form a "network connection—cloud platform—data center" construction chain, extending Bharti Airtel from traditional telecom network operations to comprehensive digital infrastructure services.
