en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Government of Canada and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador jointly announced an investment of over $32.3 million to support 17 drinking water and wastewater projects, ranging from Old Perlican to Grand Falls-Windsor, aimed at improving municipal infrastructure and creating conditions for new housing construction.

In the Town of Torbay, over $4.4 million in combined funding will be used to build the North Pond Water Treatment Plant, enhancing the quality of drinking water for local residents.

In Grand Falls-Windsor, over $5 million in funding will construct a new water storage tank and standpipe, increasing water supply capacity to support more housing development.

The remaining 15 projects are located across Newfoundland, including replacing water mains, upgrading pumping stations, and expanding water supply and wastewater treatment capacity. These works will replace aging facilities, improve service resilience, and provide foundational support for housing construction needed for population growth.

The federal government is contributing $13,090,992 through the provincial and territorial agreement stream of the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund (CHIF), the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is providing $12,923,612, and municipal governments are collectively contributing $6,294,421.

Joanne Thompson, federal Minister of Fisheries and Member of Parliament for St. John's East, stated that reliable drinking water and wastewater infrastructure is central to building vibrant communities and new housing, ensuring towns from Old Perlican to Grand Falls-Windsor have the facilities they need. Barry Petten, Newfoundland and Labrador's Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, noted that these investments will create conditions for new housing development and sustainable community growth, while bringing opportunities for local businesses and contractors.
