en.Wedoany.com Reported - Samsung Electronics announced the completion of the design work for Tesla's self-developed AI5 chip, which will be manufactured using Samsung's 2nm process technology. Samsung's Chief Technology Engineer James Kim shared the news via LinkedIn. The AI5 is the first product under Tesla's self-developed processor initiative, featuring highly advanced process technology.

Samsung completes design of Tesla AI5 chip. 2nm chip ready for production

Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously stated that a single AI5 processor can deliver computing power comparable to Nvidia's Hopper platform, while a dual-processor configuration can rival the latest Blackwell architecture. Musk emphasized that the self-developed solution offers better performance in terms of price and energy efficiency.

The adoption of the 2nm process for the AI5 surprised the industry. Market experts had widely expected Samsung to introduce this technology only with the next-generation AI6 chip. The early use of the 2nm node suggests that Samsung's yield rate for this process may have exceeded 60%, making it safe to initiate mass production.

Musk revealed in April that the AI5 design team had simultaneously submitted chip designs to both Samsung and TSMC. Due to the different process technologies of the two foundries, the chip versions from each supplier will vary slightly. Currently, the Samsung version has completed the production preparation phase, with all optimization work finalized.

In the short term, the AI5 will not be used in Tesla electric vehicles. Musk has confirmed that the processor will first be deployed in the humanoid robot Optimus and in supercomputer clusters dedicated to artificial intelligence development, with applications in electric vehicles to follow in subsequent stages.
