Wedoany.com Report-May 16, Italian energy company Edison has successfully received its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipment from the Calcasieu Pass facility in Cameron Parish, Louisiana, operated by U.S.-based Venture Global. The delivery marks the beginning of a long-term supply agreement signed in 2017.

The LNG carrier Elisa Aquila, loaded with approximately 165,000 cubic meters of LNG, departed the Calcasieu Pass plant and arrived at the Piombino terminal in Italy two weeks later. After regasification, the gas will be distributed through Italy’s national grid to meet domestic energy needs.

Fabio Dubini, Executive Vice President of Gas & Power Portfolio Management & Optimization at Edison, stated: “The start of the first long-term LNG contract with the United States marks a fundamental step in the security of Italian energy supply and in the strategy of diversification and review of our industrial portfolio.”

Under the agreement with Venture Global, Edison will import 1.4 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually, equivalent to 1 million tons of LNG, from the Calcasieu Pass facility. The company will utilize its two 174,000-cubic-meter LNG carriers to transport 14 cargoes per year, enhancing its supply chain reliability.

This new import route is set to bolster Edison’s role in the Italian energy market, where it currently supplies 23% of the country’s natural gas demand. Edison’s portfolio includes imports from Qatar (6.4 billion cubic meters), Libya (4.4 billion cubic meters), Algeria (1 billion cubic meters), Azerbaijan (1 billion cubic meters), and now the United States (1.4 billion cubic meters).

The Calcasieu Pass LNG project, operated by Venture Global, commenced commercial operations on April 15, 2025, as planned. Portugal’s Galp also reported receiving its first LNG cargo from the facility on the same day.
