en.Wedoany.com Reported - RINA has awarded an Approval in Principle (AiP) to ST Engineering Marine for the retrofit installation of a hydrogen-powered fuel cell system on a fast passenger ferry. The approval covers the replacement of one auxiliary diesel generator on board the ferry Asean Raider I with a hydrogen fuel cell system, supplemented by lithium-ion batteries.

RINA stated that the conceptual design aims to reduce carbon emissions while maintaining safety, performance, and regulatory compliance. The assessment was conducted in accordance with RINA classification rules and the International Code of Safety for Ships using Gases or other Low-flashpoint Fuels (IGF Code).

Lam Nian Hua, Vice President of ST Engineering Marine, said: "This Approval in Principle is a key feasibility milestone in our expanding retrofit capabilities, as we explore practical pathways for introducing hydrogen fuel cell technology into maritime operations. The outcome achieved in collaboration with RINA validates the robustness of our retrofit concept and demonstrates our engineering expertise in safely integrating new technologies into existing vessels."

Simone YONG, RINA Marine Executive Director for South Asia Pacific, added: "This project demonstrates how Approval in Principle can serve as an effective tool for the early assessment of innovative solutions, particularly for alternative fuels and energy systems. By supporting this feasibility study, RINA aims to facilitate informed design decisions and help ensure a smooth transition from concept to detailed engineering."
