As part of the AU$37 million reconstruction project, approximately two kilometers of existing asphalt pavement will be replaced with high-durability concrete pavement.
The Pilbara Ports Authority stated that this upgrade will enhance the safety, reliability, and efficiency of the Utah Bulk Handling Facility while accommodating high-capacity heavy vehicle traffic. The Utah Roundabout Road provides heavy vehicle access to the Utah Bulk Handling Facility, which is located at one of the world's busiest bulk export hubs. The road was originally designed to support approximately 12 million tonnes of freight annually, but currently carries about 20 million tonnes per year, placing greater stress on the pavement and accelerating wear. The reconstruction aims to deliver a long-term solution suited to current and future freight demands.
The existing asphalt pavement will be entirely replaced with concrete capable of withstanding sustained heavy vehicle use. The new pavement is expected to reduce maintenance requirements, improve road reliability, and provide safer access to the facility. For freight operators, the more durable pavement is expected to reduce operational disruptions caused by pavement deterioration and repeated repairs.
Minister for Ports and Regional Development Stephen Dawson stated that the project will strengthen infrastructure supporting the resources sector. Dawson said that investing in the Utah Roundabout Road will enhance the safety and efficiency of one of the Pilbara's most important freight hubs, ensuring it continues to meet the growing demands of the resources industry. The project is expected to take approximately 18 months to complete, with works staged to allow the Utah Bulk Handling Facility to remain operational throughout the construction period. The Pilbara Ports Authority will minimize disruption to heavy vehicle access and trade during the staged road reconstruction. Given the volume of commodities handled at the facility, this staged approach is critical for operators using the facility.
The project follows the completion of an AU$32 million upgrade to the eight-kilometer Utah Road Connector in 2025. Together, these projects strengthen the road network linking heavy vehicles, the bulk handling facility, and the broader Port Hedland area. Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel stated that the facility plays a vital role in moving regional commodities to international markets. Michel noted that the project will provide safe and more reliable access to the Utah Bulk Handling Facility, which is essential for shipping regional goods to global markets.
