en.Wedoany.com Reported - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District, has completed the 2026 dredging project at Conneaut Harbor, Ohio, under a contract valued at $4.1 million, removing approximately 75,000 cubic yards of sediment. The project began on September 1 and was completed in 10 days, about 5 days ahead of schedule. The contract was awarded in June of this year to Michigan-based contractor Walsh Service Solutions.

The dredging was carried out using mechanical methods, with the work area extending from the federal navigation channel at the entrance of Conneaut Harbor to the Canadian National dock. Approximately 75,000 cubic yards of sediment generated by the dredging was transported to a local sediment recycling facility, where it will be used by the City of Conneaut and the Conneaut Port Authority for subsequent beneficial reuse.

Conneaut Harbor is located along the shore of Lake Erie and is one of the deep-draft commercial ports on the Great Lakes. The authorized channel depth in the harbor ranges from approximately 8 to 29 feet, with the outer harbor area having greater depths and portions of the entrance channel being relatively shallower. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is responsible for maintaining the federal navigation channel in the harbor to meet the navigation needs of bulk carriers and other commercial vessels.

The harbor handled approximately 3.7 million tons of cargo in 2023, of which iron ore accounted for about 95%, with the remaining cargo types mainly consisting of limestone, sand and gravel, and other bulk materials. Maritime activity at the port corresponds to more than $271 million in economic activity annually.

Conneaut Harbor conducts periodic dredging based on channel shoaling conditions, federal funding arrangements, and navigation demand. In 2025, approximately 70,000 cubic yards of sediment were removed from the harbor, and in 2026 the dredging volume increased to approximately 75,000 cubic yards. For fiscal year 2026, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has also allocated approximately $5.864 million for operations and maintenance at Conneaut Harbor, including channel dredging and dredged material management-related work.
