en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 12, the Port of Gothenburg in Sweden announced that the reinforcement project for the 700-meter quay wall on the south side of the container terminal had been completed on schedule, with actual expenditure kept within the contract budget. The project, carried out by NCC since spring 2024, is an important part of the Skandia Gateway port upgrade project. The next phase of underwater blasting and dredging is scheduled to start on October 13, involving more than 200,000 cubic meters of soft dredged material and approximately 30,000 cubic meters of rock removal.

The completed reinforcement project is located at the westernmost 700 meters of the quay wall on the south side of the container terminal, with construction lasting more than two years. After completion, the Port of Gothenburg will have Boskalis Sweden carry out underwater blasting and dredging immediately adjacent to the quay wall, with the construction area covering a zone approximately 50 meters wide outside this section of the quay wall. This phase is scheduled for completion in March 2027.

The new phase of construction is planned to remove more than 200,000 cubic meters of soft sediment and approximately 30,000 cubic meters of rock, with the goal of improving water depth conditions near the terminal area to meet the requirements for berthing vessels with a maximum draught of 17.5 meters. The Port of Gothenburg is responsible for the works in waters adjacent to the terminal, while Boskalis Sweden undertakes the corresponding underwater blasting and dredging operations.

The Swedish Maritime Administration is simultaneously responsible for the broader modification of the port approach channel and vessel turning basin, including underwater blasting, dredging, and adjustment of navigational aid facilities. The agency is advancing the procurement of relevant construction contracts, with signing expected in early 2027, and construction of the approach channel and turning basin scheduled to start in August 2027.

The Skandia Gateway project is planned to enable the Port of Gothenburg to accommodate container ships with a maximum length of 430 meters, a beam of 65 meters, and a maximum draught of 17.5 meters. Compared with vessels currently able to call at the port, the new design vessel type is 30 meters longer, 5 meters wider, and allows for a draught increase of up to 4 meters.

The Port of Gothenburg and the Swedish Maritime Administration plan to put the upgraded terminal and approach channel into operation by the end of 2028. Dredging in waters adjacent to the terminal is expected to be completed in March 2027, while subsequent construction of the approach channel and turning basin will proceed as separate works packages.
