UK-based Breedon Invests £4 Million in a 50,000-Tonne Asphalt Plant

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 12, UK building materials company Breedon Group announced that it had invested £4 million to build an asphalt mixture production plant at Cragmill Quarry in Northumberland. Located in Belford, the plant has been fully operational following initial certification and is expected to produce approximately 50,000 tonnes of asphalt mixture per year. The construction took 12 months and involved the demolition of existing production facilities, site reconfiguration, and the construction of new production facilities.

The original asphalt production facilities at Cragmill Quarry had previously been decommissioned by the previous operator, and asphalt production at the site had been suspended for more than 10 years. Breedon Group carried out renovations at the original site, demolishing the decommissioned facilities, reconfiguring the production area, and building a new asphalt mixture production system. The new plant can produce a variety of road paving materials, including the Breedon Performance Asphalt product range.

The new production facilities use liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as fuel and are equipped with warm mix asphalt (WMA) production capabilities, while also supporting the blending of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) material. The recycled material mainly comes from existing road milling operations and can be reused in asphalt mixture production. The company has not yet disclosed the maximum blending ratio of recycled material, the rated hourly capacity of the production equipment, or specific fuel consumption indicators.

The plant is equipped with asphalt mixture storage facilities with a total capacity of 120 tonnes, used for temporary storage of finished products and loading of transport vehicles. The new plant offers both customer on-site pickup and delivery services and is capable of operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The company can arrange production and transport operations according to order requirements.

The new plant's supply range covers Northumberland, extending south to Newcastle and north to the Scottish Borders. In addition to external road engineering customers, the facility will also supply road paving materials to Breedon Group's Surfacing Solutions construction team. The company plans to increase output based on subsequent order demand and gradually expand the range of asphalt materials produced at Cragmill Quarry.
