en.Wedoany.com Reported - U.S. electric utility company Hawaiian Electric submitted a comprehensive integrated grid plan request for proposals (RFP) covering three Hawaiian islands on July 17, 2026.

The RFP plans to procure nearly 1,650 gigawatt-hours of variable renewable energy from solar and wind, along with 465 megawatts of grid-forming resources and 111 megawatts of firm capacity. Hawaiian Electric stated that selected integrated grid plan projects are expected to be operational between 2031 and 2034. The company is also seeking to expedite regulatory approval to add up to 500 megawatts of fuel-flexible firm generation on Oahu.

"Hawaii needs to accelerate its pace, and we believe that an accelerated procurement plan is the best way to drive competition, evaluate all options, and more quickly build a portfolio that meets efficiency, reliability, and low-carbon emission requirements," said Scott Seu, CEO of Hawaiian Electric. The implementation of this integrated grid plan RFP will help reduce oil use for power generation and support the state's goal of achieving 100% renewable energy by 2045. Oahu, home to nearly one million residents, accounts for more than 70% of Hawaii's total electricity generation.
