Boeing: Global commercial aircraft fleet to exceed 50,000 units in 20 years
en.Wedoany.com Reported - Boeing expects air travel demand to double over the next 20 years. As passenger and cargo airlines increase capacity, the global commercial aircraft fleet is projected to grow by nearly 80% to more than 50,000 units by 2045.
In its 2026 Commercial Market Outlook (the report), Boeing forecasts that global airlines will need nearly 44,000 new aircraft over the next 20 years to support continued growth in air travel and the expansion of air cargo operations. Half of these new aircraft will replace previous-generation models, with the new models offering higher fuel efficiency.
The report predicts a balanced demand distribution among the nearly 44,000 new aircraft expected to be delivered over the next 20 years. Mature markets, including North America, Eurasia, Oceania, and Northeast Asia, will account for approximately 45% of new aircraft deliveries; while transitioning and emerging markets, such as China, the Middle East, Latin America, South Asia and Southeast Asia, and Africa, will account for about 55%. Replacement demand is rising as mature and transitioning markets renew their fleets. By 2045, previous-generation aircraft are expected to account for less than 10% of the global fleet.
In air cargo, current demand remains resilient. Despite market disruptions, international freighter capacity has grown by 5% so far in 2026, highlighting the flexibility and agility of air cargo networks in meeting demand. Air cargo traffic is expected to grow at an average annual rate of approximately 3.7% through 2045, outpacing economic and trade growth.
