Boeing plans to first obtain ETOPS-180 certification when making its initial delivery in 2027, after which the 777-9 will offer greater route flexibility.

Boeing recently updated the official range data for the entire 777X series. With the maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) unchanged, the standard 777-9 model can now fly 8,000 miles (approximately 14,820 kilometers) nonstop, compared to the previous 7,285 miles.

During a media event in Everett, Washington, Boeing stated that the TIA 5 phase will validate ETOPS (Extended-range Twin-engine Operational Performance Standards) capabilities. Boeing initially plans to apply for ETOPS-180, a conservative initial ETOPS application common when launching new intercontinental aircraft. ETOPS-180 means that the 777-9 must be able to reach an alternate airport within a maximum of 180 minutes when operating on a single engine, a rule that is important in route planning.

Boeing said that despite years of delays in the certification process, the program remains on track, and the first delivery of the 777-9 is still expected in 2027. After entry into service (EIS), Boeing plans to expand the ETOPS certification. The competing model, the Airbus A350-1000, is subject to the ETOPS-370 rule.
