These two tenders are issued under a long-term agreement (LTA), covering the design, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of BESS projects across India on a destination delivery basis. The two tenders collectively include 500 MW/1000 MWh (2-hour BESS) projects under Category A, and 250 MW/1000 MWh (4-hour BESS) projects under Category B.

Under Category B, Powergrid seeks bidders to develop a 250 MW/1000 MWh (4-hour) BESS project. The successful bidder will be responsible for the design, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of the project. The tender documents are provided free of charge, on a destination delivery basis.

Under Category A, the company is tendering for 500 MW/1000 MWh (2-hour) BESS projects across India, also on a destination delivery basis and under a long-term agreement (LTA). Powergrid emphasizes full compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, and stresses principles of fairness and transparency in its dealings with bidders and contractors.

Powergrid (POWERGRID) is preparing to play a larger role in battery energy storage. The company has secured its first BESS project through a bidding process in Andhra Pradesh and views it as an opportunity to build expertise in energy storage deployment. During the FY2026 analyst and institutional investor meeting, the company outlined a strategy centered on renewable energy integration, battery energy storage systems (BESS), high-voltage direct current (HVDC) networks, and overseas expansion. The company believes that India's target of achieving over 900 GW of power generation capacity by 2036 could create nearly INR 7.9 trillion in transmission opportunities within inter-state and intra-state transmission networks.
