Founded in 1935 and headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, Fujitsu is a global leader in information and communication technology, with businesses spanning computer hardware, software, network equipment, and system integration services. 1FINITY is a Fujitsu subsidiary focused on network operations, responsible for the research, development, sales, and service of network equipment and solutions. Chunghwa Telecom is the largest integrated telecommunications operator in Taiwan, formerly the Directorate General of Telecommunications under the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, restructured into a company in 1996, offering diversified services including fixed networks, mobile communications, internet, and data communications.
Under the agreement, the three parties will leverage Chunghwa Telecom's submarine cable systems to advance the verification of all-optical network-related technologies and conduct technical verification of distributed data center technologies based on all-optical networks. An all-optical network is a network architecture that uses optical signals for data exchange and transmission from transmission nodes to end users, significantly reducing power consumption and latency while improving transmission efficiency compared to traditional optoelectronic hybrid networks. With the proliferation of artificial intelligence and big data applications, the demand for data transmission between data centers has surged, and all-optical networks are considered a key technology direction to meet future computing infrastructure needs.
In the field of quantum technology, the three parties will explore the applicability of quantum technology in distributed data center network control, as well as technical verification of application scenarios such as quantum key distribution. Quantum key distribution leverages quantum mechanics principles to achieve secure key exchange, representing one of the most mature application directions in quantum communication, providing theoretically unbreakable encryption guarantees for high-security scenarios such as finance and government affairs.
The cooperation is set against the backdrop of network energy consumption and traffic pressure driven by the rapid growth of data center computing demand in Taiwan. Fujitsu stated that this collaboration aims to verify the practical effects of all-optical networks in reducing power consumption and addressing traffic growth.
